About Red Roof Hens

Red Roof Hens Family Homestead is a small family operated homestead located In Durham NC, raising rare and fancy breed poultry with a focus on Bantam breeds and Large Fowl Ameracaunas. We are working toward supporting some heritage breeds and accepted color varieties that are slowly disappearing.

We are not a large scale hatchery, every bird here is loved. They have names. They are mourned when they die. We get excited when we hatch out new babies on a small scale to share with others and for ourselves.

We breed our birds to the Standard of Perfection (AKA SOP) that is set by the American Bantam Association (ABA) and American Poultry Association (APA). All our lines are a constant work in progress.

We are members of various breed clubs in the US. We are NPIP ( National Poultry Improvement Plan) tested for Pullorum Typhoid and Avian Influenza clean. NPIP Statuses can be verified by state at: http://www.poultryimprovement.org/statesContent.cfm We are NPIP # 55-1812 in NC.

We have started focusing on accepted colors that are slowly disappearing. While we love a good project color, accepted colors need love too.

We hand raise all our birds, they are handled several times a day on a daily basis.

We breed first for temperament, any signs of aggression are bred out of our lines. Our breeds are meant for families, an aggressive bird is not a family friendly bird. Our breeding philosophy is short and sweet:  friendliness, health and laying. We want family friendly birds that lay well and have fun personalities.

We vaccinate all our birds for Mareks, both hatched here and any birds that are brought in from other NPIP farms.

Let us introduce you to Bantam poultry, one of our passions. The word Bantam means mini chicken or as one story says, original true bantams were found in Indonesia and sailors adapted to taking Bantams with them on the seas. There are bantams which are breeds that have been selectively bred over time to be a mini version of the large fowl breed and then true bantams. A true bantam means the breed has no large fowl or standard size poultry version.

Bantams:

Bantam simply means mini chicken. Bantams range from very tiny to a more medium size chicken, for example, I would call bantam favorelles a medium size bird. They're not as small as an old english but not as big as a standard size favorelle.

I put a comparison of some large fowl or standard size Ameraucana versus a bantam Ameraucana. Bantams are wonderful for those who do not have a large amount of space, but want to raise their own egg layers. There are many different breeds of bantam. I'm sure we can find a breed that will meet your needs.
